So...

Long time, no update hey? for one thing, I kept myself busy with the independent media centre in Montebello last month. There's some traces of what went down there at http://imc-montebello.org. Also, I've since then biked from montreal to toronto, where I'm visiting family and training with CKLN, ryerson's campus community station at 88.1fm, towards the left end of the dial.

The content available from this site is gradually being transferred to http://radio4all.net. Please let me know if you are having trouble finding things that you are looking for, and PLEASE, be patient with radio4all; it's worth the wait...

Various reflections on the progress of the site: http://mtlaudio.blogspot.com

28 march 2007

Two feature-length pieces uploaded today, both produced with the help of other ckut staff and volunteers, both being broadcast as parts of longer documentaries focused on racial profiling and police brutality.

Last week, a number of shorter and stranger experiemnts were uploaded, including copenmix-1 and -2, mtl2012-nooze. At the same time, two pieces focused on International Women's Day (IWD) were uploaded. MmmHmm.

09 february 2007

3 new uploads today, including the new featured audio from yesterday's press conference hijacking...it's short, check it...

2 february 2007

springorcrushes.mp3 was uploaded today. There's been some major changes in the format of mtlaudio.org, making room for images! Ozkan Ay gets the credit for the .jpgs. There have been a number of new uploads in the last month, including the special LIVE broadcast of mtl2012_episode5, in celebration of art's birthday. Also, I just learned how to put in the media player you see above. Here's where I found it: http://nunzioweb.com/streaming_audio-example.htm

20 november 2006 -=- browser compatible + fnb/atsa audio

A short piece with two interviews about Food Not Bombs and ATSA was uploaded on 14 november..Check it out here.

What?!? You don't use Firefox? Sorry for the visibility problem, what with that stuff on the right that was invading the main part of the page. I've finally gotten around to fixing in up - mostly by getting rid of what was causing the problem. Something like, "the simplest solution is often the bestest.". It all has to do with something known as browser compatibility. I use firefox. I test with Explorer now, and I have absolutely NO idea what this page looks like on Safari, or other browsers I've never heard of.

Download Firefox Web Browser here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

10 november 2006 -=- mtlaudio.org gets valid!

In a moment of supreme triumph over the nit-picky world of Markup Language, the grammatical integrity of index.html and css.main have just been validated by the automated software tools developed by w3c. Scroll down to this pages' footer to further explore this exciting development.

10 october 2006 -=- promo CD unleashed + Peter Collins Interview Up'd

Hi! So, maybe you've heard my shameless self promo CD vol. 1, and you're here to see what all the fuss is about. Well, let me tell ya! Just this evening I've uploaded another world-exclusive audio premier; This one's got a weight to that's entirely unique...it's starts with a kind of windy whistle, with some feedback, then, "Peter Collins has been in Bath Prison for twenty-three years..."

Peter Collins is the life force behind http://buriedaliveillustrations.com, and a well-informed and articulate critic of Canaduh's prison system. I recorded an interview with him on 24 september 2006. Download or stream it from the audio page.

04 october 2006 -=- streamin' like never before!

Stream! Yeah! It really wasn't so complicated after all, but it took some experimenting; You can now listen to mtlaudio.org files without the hassle of downloading them. .m3u files tell your audio player where to find audio files on the internet. So long as your connection is fast enough, this saves you the hard-drive space for stuff you don't want to keep. Very exciting.

Stream this: http://mtlaudio.org/m3us/mtl2012-episode2-20min.m3u

Download winamp for $free to play .m3us: http://www.winamp.com/

02 october 2006 -=- uploads uploads bo buploads!

Two new pieces of free radio uploaded today, so check out the audio page. The streaming still doesn't work, but I'll get on that before you know it. Until then, keep downloading! Anyone getting the RSS updates will notice the annoying advertisements brought to your in-box by the "free" feed publisher. These will be gone when I learn to publish the feed myself.

There's a video of last weeks' Critical Mass ride here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5636817695874480439

25 september 2006 -=- Are Ess Ess?

RSS? Yes, well, still learning how to use it - experimenting. Anyway, I sent one out today, and hope to here if it works for you. I use Mozilla Thunderbird, which you can download from their website: http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/. In most recent news, three french interviews about the 2006 Die-In for bike freedom are available for download on the audio page. There's a photo slide show of the event here: http://zipfuret.spaces.live.com.

mtl2012_episode2_20min will be up this week, featuring cold weather, planes on Parc Avenue and and prognosticizing about peak oil prices. Take it easy!

15 september 2006 -=- on-line NOW!

Not just 'ready' anymore...we're on-line! You probably got here by clicking on the link in an e-mail from me. As I understand it, it'll be a day or two before the proper domain name, http://mtlaudio.org brings you to the site. Nonetheless, welcome! It shouldn't take you long to explore all three pages, (links are conveniently located on the left there). The most exciting thing is definitely the world-exclusive release of MTL2012_episode1, available free for download right here. Let me know what you think, or if you'd like to participate in episode 3!

03 september 2006 -=- ready, set...

Okay! We're ready to go on-line here, folks. The first audio available for download will be an episode of Off The Hour, described in more detail right here.

Besides the web busy-ness, I'm getting everything together for my first monthly report to the people who are really running this show. This report will require me to check my phone messages, then bug Les Courtiers D'Assurances Fort for proof that I am insured, then I'll bug the Caisse Desjardins for an account statement, then I'll get Yann to sign a reciept for my phone and internet payments, then I'll double-check the accounting form I've filled out, and get Marc to sign the piece of paper that says "Charlie has been in Montreal, working on this project for twenty hours per week, throughout the month of august."
Word.

02 september 2006 -=- experimental formating

Tonight I'll start formatting the audio page. I'm going to upload some of my past audio productions as soon as the page goes on-line. Looks like cablan will do the job well enough, but still needs to be settled next week. Looking forward to an exciting launch!

Today's additions to the audio page: clickez-vous ici, si vous plait.

23 august 2006 -=- looky here

So, today I'm gonna polish everything up a bit, to prepare these pages for potentially critical eyes and minds...what do you think? turnthetide AT ckut DOT ca with your witty remarks, and suggestions for montreal-based hosts.

Not much today; there's some more links to netcasters on the research page.

So, I'm on track right now. The next big thing is to decide on a server, upload what I've got so far, and announce the existance of mtlaudio.org to the world! Today's research looks at the CRTC and servers. Mmmmmmmmmm.

14 august 2006 -=- get the money / dolla dolla bills y'all!

Exciting news in the development of MTLAUDIO.ORG: The cheques are in the bank! Besides today's entry on the research page, I'm starting the necessary accounting busy-ness that goes along with a project like this.

09 august 2006 -=- props ta tha Jay Vees!

mtlaudio.org is a jeunes volontaires project. It begins today as a humble html page accessible only to me. mo ah Ha Ha ha HAAGHGH! It will become a site where the computers of the world will have access to audio productions that are somehow related to Montreal - mostly in that I helped produce them in Montreal - but some may require more imagination to make the link...

Here's a quote from my project proposal:

mtlaudio.org is about learning as much as I can about the emerging field of internet radio. My project will be to develop a website that will allow me to distribute audio throughout the world by podcast, download and streaming, and to produce audio programming for the website.

This may not look like much right now, but it's a big start. I've taught myself everything I know about on-line publishing through web tutorials, and it takes me a long time to get a simple page like this written. I'll teach myself a lot more before it's all said and done. Also, I've gotten in the habit of writing pages by hand, nevermind those fancy publishing programs, give me notepad and a browser, coffee, and hours and hours and hours...

So, a big part of this project is research. Subjects to explore include:
-existing internet radio services
crtc standards and regulations for internet radio

Another big part of the project is designing the web page. Every colour, border and empty space has to be played around with. Word.

I'm currently debating myself about how honest I should be about the process of developing this project. A paragraph like this, for example, will not come across as very professional. However, it may help me make connections with others who can relate to - literally de-sensitizing - long hours spent in front of a computer, and the many little steps involved in developing a website. In another train of thought: less is more, especially when it comes to words. Why should I assume that anyone visiting this sight wants to read my midnight diatribe on the relevance of honest web publishing? At this point, it is yet to be determined whether or not this site will stand as a brightly polished, frighteningly efficient transferer of information, or, whether human frailties such as this are allowed to live on. Three hours is enough for tonight. Besides, it's almost tomorrow. G'night!

Three months later - nov 20 - I haven't erased that paragraph yet. I probably will soon. Enjoy it while you still can!
